The Ben May Library in downtown Mobile, is named after philanthropist Ben May (1889-1972). He was the Founder and President of The Gulf Lumber Company and served as a Director of The First National Bank of Mobile and of Morrison's Cafeterias. He also funded Alexander Fleming who discovered Penicillin (and won a Nobel Prize) and he founded The Ben May Institute for Cancer Research in Chicago, Illinois. The Ben May Charitable Trust donated $1,000,000 to help in the renovation of the main library and it was named in his honor on March 23rd, 2004.
